Football matches in Europe cancelled following Paris attacks

BERLIN, Germany – Authorities in Germany cancelled a friendly match with the Netherlands on Tuesday for security reasons, a day after another game between Belgium and Spain in Brussels was called off in the wake of last week’s deadly attacks in Paris.

German authorities cited a “concrete security threat” in the city of Hannover for calling off the game, which German Chancellor Angela Merkel was due to attend.

Less than two hours before kick-off, authorities began evacuating 49,000-capacity HDI Arena in Hannover.

The city’s president of police Volker Kluwe told the BBC “there were plans for some kind of explosion.”

Meanwhile, England’s match against France at London’s Wembley stadium was going ahead Tuesday, with tributes planned for the 129 people killed in attacks in Paris on Tuesday, one of them at a football stadium.
